Red Valentino Coat (similar less expensive version here), Vince Sweater, Philosophy Skirt (old, last seen here, similar here), Sezane Boots (similar here), Valextra Bag

It makes me giggle to think that not terribly long ago, the idea of an all-white outfit for fall would have been frowned upon. I’m all for etiquette and dress codes, but I’m grateful to live in a day and age when the “don’t wear white after Labor Day” rule is essentially antiquated. As much as I love the warm, rich colors that come along with the change in seasons, an all-white outfit in the middle of the autumn feels like a breath of fresh air.

In the past, I’ve worn white in the fall by layering a leather jacket over a summer dress and by pairing billowy ivory separates, but in London a few weeks ago, I needed an outfit to accommodate some chillier temperatures. I can’t recommend stocking up on slim cashmere sweaters enough–they’re endlessly versatile and act as the perfect cozy base layer for so many fall and winter outfits. This Vince one has been my first choice lately, so much so that it made my Best Buys of September list.

I knew that if I paired it with knee-high boots (mine are Sezane from last year, but these are similar) on this chilly day, I’d be able to pull off one of my favorite summer skirts (last seen here, similar here) and still be warm enough. I certainly want to take advantage of those days as often as I can before the weather demands tights or pants! Cashmere and lace is such a pretty, feminine combination, and I love the way this white skirt contrasted with the creamier ivory of my sweater and coat. If you’re putting together a monochromatic outfit, don’t worry too much about matching colors exactly–varying hues can be just as elegant and impactful.

I never go to London without packing a trench coat–they’re so quintessentially English, plus they’re ideal for London’s frequently brisk weather. While this coat isn’t technically a trench, it has some of the same distinguishable features, but in a warmer wool fabric. This one is similar at a fraction of the price. As a finishing touch, I couldn’t resist grabbing my ivory Valextra bag I got last year. If you’re wearing all-white but don’t have the perfect neutral shade, opt for a pop of color instead–burgundy or blush would look especially lovely for autumn.
